In October 2006, the first episode of Torchwood was broadcast on digital channel BBC3. The show, a spin-off from Doctor Who, was immediately very popular and 2.5 million people watched it, making it the highest rated ever show broadcast on digital.

The show focuses on Captain Jack Harkness, played by John Barrowman, who we first met in the First Series of the newly revamped Doctor Who. Jack plus Gwen Cooper (police liaison), Dr Owen Harper (medical, 2nd-in-command), Toshito Sato (computer specialist) and finally, Ianto Jones (general support), arming the world with alien technology to save Earth from invasion. The team are non-United Nations or UK government based. Torchwood's HQ, known as The Hub, is based in central Cardiff, Wales underneath The Time Rift is. This Rift is featured in the show quite regularly as many unknown life forces have used it to get to Earth so that they can carry their evil plans. Needless to say, despite much in-fighting, the team pull through and save the day.

Torchwood returns to our screens on 16th January 2008, premiering on BBC2 first, with a repeat later the same night on BBC3. The Doctor's assistant from Series Three, Martha Jones, will be joining the Torchwood team in Cardiff for several episodes before returning to the main show partway through it's Series Four.

In the finale of new Who Series Four, the Torchwood team along with Sarah Jane Smith, Rose Tyler, Martha Jones and several other returning characters, help defeat the Daleks and their evil creator Davros in a battle to save planet Earth.

In December 2008, I was lucky enough to meet Gareth David-Lloyd, who plays Ianto Jones in the hit show. Click Here for more information.
