BOOK REVIEW

Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire

This explosive novel in the Star Wars saga reveals the untold story that takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

In a time of crisis for the Rebellion after they have been drive out from their hidden base on Hoth by the Empire. Han Solo is frozen in carbonite and is being taken the vile gangster Jabba the Hutt by his arch-enemy Bobba Fett the bounty hunter. Leia begins to mount a rescue mission for him and Darth Vader scours the galazy for the young Jedi Luke Skywalker, where another sinister figure emerges from the shadows. His name being Xizor, the cunning, ruthless leader of the powerful criminal organisation Black Sun. He is pitting himself against Darth Vader to gain the favour of the mutual master Emperor Palpatine.

Leia, Luke, Lando and Chewbacca find betrayal and death at every turn to try their friend Han Solo who is on his way to Jabba's Palace. There is also interest from the Black Sun organisation and it's leader Prince Xizor who himself has taken an interest in Luke, so he can use him against his rival Darth Vader and send his bounty hunters after Luke. Vader himself continues his quest to see if he can bring Luke to his Emporer but is continually hampered by the efforts of Prince Xizor who he is suspicious of. Leia also tries to make an alliance with the Black Sun organisation to help in their cause against the Empire. But the Black Sun has allied itself with the Empire to defeat the Rebellion for their own ends to increase their own control in the galaxy.

This story is thrilling to the end with Luke, Leia and co winning through in the end thwarting the Black Sun organisation and battling against them to stop their intentions and also against the Empire who also come into conflict with the criminal organisation, Black Sun. Various worlds are visited including Luke's homeworld Tattoine, the Bothan home world Bothawui and the Imperial Centre on the plant Couscant, the Core world of the Empire.

This is an exciting look to what happened to try and save Han Solo since they first met in events of the first movie Star Wars: A New Hope and to their conclusion in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

The other characters in this novel include the 2 inseperable droids R2-D2 and C3PO who work well on the screen. Guri, Xizor's deadly android assistant who makes mincemeat of any opponent in battle, Dash Randar, the pilot who owes Lando favours and helps out, also Wedge Antilles the commander of Rogue Squandron who helps Luke and co when they need help. But at the end an exciting read that you will find to put down.

This is the first book of the Star Wars books I have read and it is brilliant and I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read Science Fiction. Since this is such an enjoyable read this book gets my top marks.
