On 26th September 2007, NBC in America aired the first
episode of a modern and re-imagined Bionic Woman. In its cast were British
actress Michelle Ryan, alongside US
sci-fi star Katee Sackhoff. The show
producers had previous brought back Battlestar Galactica, plus some of them had previously worked on 90s
cult favourite The X-Files.
The pilot episode was watched by an impressive 5.5 million,
but unfortunately it had fallen to 2.2 million in the US. In the UK, however,
the show was aired on 11th March 2008 on ITV2 scoring rating of 2.5 million. The
very high digital television ratings for the pilot episode was the same as
Doctor Who spin-off
Torchwood, when it first aired on BBC Three.
Following the initial positive reception for the show, both
in America and the United Kingdom, it appears that only after 8 episodes that
the show will not be renewed for a second series. I was saddened to hear this
news, as I enjoyed this show immensely and I thought that
Michelle Ryan was
excellent in the title role. I also liked Katee Sackhoff as the villainess Sarah
Corvus, the first Bionic Woman created by the mysterious Berkut Group. The show
featured plenty of action, suspense, humour and drama, including in the first
few episodes the two Bionic Women facing off against each other. Due to the
axing of the show, many plotlines were left unfinished, which I feel is a great
opportunity missed by the US TV channel.
I now own the complete series of this excellent show on
DVD. I hope many other people discover this excellent show as well.
